Antioxidant Revolution in the Plastic Industry: From Protection to Performance Enhancement

Antioxidants have long surpassed their traditional role in aging protection and become a key engine for high-performance modern plastic products. In the field of engineering plastics, specially designed antioxidants maintain the mechanical strength of polyamide in high temperature and high humidity environments, enabling automotive engine compartment components to withstand long-term thermal shocks. In transparent plastics, the new generation of low color antioxidants not only protect the material but also have little impact on optical transparency, resulting in longer service life for LCD screen frames and optical lenses.



The innovation of antioxidants in the food packaging industry is particularly noteworthy. In multi-layer co extruded films, different antioxidants are precisely distributed in each layer: the outer layer focuses on UV resistance, the middle layer strengthens thermal stability, and the inner layer strictly controls migration safety. This "gradient protection" concept extends the shelf life of fresh milk packaging from 7 days to 21 days, reducing food waste by up to 30%. Even more cleverly, certain antioxidants can work synergistically with oxygen scavengers to create a low oxygen environment inside the packaging, further extending the shelf life.



In the plastic recycling industry chain, antioxidants play the role of "regenerative enhancers". Recycling plastics has undergone multiple processing steps, resulting in damaged molecular chains and increased sensitivity to oxidation. Specialized recycled antioxidants can not only protect materials from degradation during reprocessing, but also partially repair oxidative damage points. A European company has developed a specialized antioxidant package for recycled polyolefins, which enables the performance of HDPE recovered three times to approach the level of raw materials, greatly enhancing the economic value of recycled plastics.
