Antioxidants in Coatings and Adhesives: Dual Mission of Protection and Aesthetics

The antioxidant system of high-end car paint is a perfect combination of chemistry and aesthetics. The antioxidant in the varnish layer must meet multiple stringent requirements simultaneously: efficient resistance to UV and ozone attacks, preventing paint yellowing and loss of gloss; Excellent transparency, without affecting the color expression of the paint surface; Extremely low volatility, does not escape and form bubbles during the baking process; It also needs to coexist peacefully with dozens of additives such as crosslinking agents and leveling agents. The newly developed dendritic polymer antioxidant has become a new favorite in this field due to its precise molecular size control.

The antioxidant challenge of building sealant comes from multidimensional environmental pressure. The silicone sealant at the joint of the curtain wall needs to withstand the synergistic attacks of photochemical smog, acid rain, and thermal cycling in urban environments. The composite antioxidant system is ingeniously formulated, with hindered phenols responsible for initial protection, carbon free radical scavengers responding to sudden oxidative stress, and UV absorbers providing long-term photo stable protection. This multi-layered defense strategy extends the expected lifespan of modern building sealants from 10 years to over 25 years.

The antioxidant requirements of pressure-sensitive adhesives are more subtle. Convenience tape requires mild antioxidant to maintain long-term adhesion, while surgical tape requires strong protection to ensure stability after sterilization. The breakthrough in microcapsule encapsulation technology allows antioxidants to slowly release after the adhesive has cured, achieving precise control of the protection period. Some smart packaging adhesives are even designed with an oxidation response mechanism, where antioxidants are activated and start working only when the packaging is opened and the material is exposed to oxygen.

The application of antioxidants in the field of cultural relic protection demonstrates the cultural value of this technology. The special antioxidant added to the adhesive used for ancient painting restoration can not only prevent the adhesive from aging itself, but also to some extent inhibit the oxidative degradation of the painting paper or cloth base. These antioxidants have undergone strict screening to ensure that they will not change color or release harmful substances for hundreds of years, silently guarding the material carrier of human cultural heritage.
